Yet another reason to love South Dakota. The lightening bugs. Or Fireflies. Whatever you call them, they are VERY cool. I remember visiting my great grandparents in Arkansas when I was around 8 or so and running around like crazy, with my sister, until we caught one. Gramma helped us put it in an old mayonnaise jar and we got to sleep with it in our room that night. It was neat watching it light up until I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of magical things that have a light up their butt.
Travis and my boys had never actually seen a lightening bug. Until this year. I was honored to witness Trav's first sight on our anniversary (in between giggles at the obnoxious laser show by the Falls). The boys just happened to see them one night while we were out driving. Bryce is still perplexed as to how a bug can have a light up booty, and he finds it quite humorous that it is the booty that lights up. (He's four. Anything having to do with poop, pee, toots, booties and his male organ are hilarious to him. It is getting annoying, actually. I'll blog on that another day.)
Anyway, I am now reliving my childhood visit with my grandparents as I watch my own boys chase through the yard, in their own clumsy attempts at catching the ever lit up, but ever far reaching, bugs. I am also taken aback at how truly magical my backyard looks at night, with the boys and the bugs. It is indescribable, really. Something I am sure would have been on the cover of some Norman Rockwell magazine. But, I get to live it in real life. And the magic of it all is breathtaking.
I hope this summer lasts forever.
