School Daze

Brady had his first day of school yesterday. He was so excited, I couldn't get him to eat anything for breakfast. He just wanted to "Goooooooo Miiiiiinesssss!" So, go we did. Once we got there, his excitement didn't waiver. He happily hung his little backpack and coat up in his own locker, and ran into his classroom, where he officially introduced himself to the only other child in the room. "Hi! Hi! HI! HI!" with each greeting bringing him closer and closer to the poor child's face. Once the kid officially recognized Brady's attempt at friendship, Brady backed off and contented himself with learning the layout of his new hang out. He seemed comfortable. He seemed happy. He was calm . . . not a word typically used to describe my Bubba.

Of course, I took a bazillion pictures. Those will come, in time. When it was time for us to leave, there were no tears or tantrums. I felt good leaving him there and he was all ready and waiting for me with his teacher when I went to pick him up. He seemed to have enjoyed himself. His teacher told me he was very good, though he scarfed his snack (I am not surprised, he scarfs everything, but more so when he's hungry). He played well with the other kiddos, and "he even made a great friend".

He was still starving when we got home, so we had an early lunch, in which he inhaled, and, afterwards, promptly fell sound asleep in my arms on the couch. Apparently, school is exhausting. And I LOVE IT!

In the 3 hours he was gone and the 3 hours afterward, while he napped, I got so much freaking work done! Amazing what can be accomplished when my cyclone isn't following me. I was very skeptical about him being ready for pre-school. But, he seems to be doing well and, though I thought I wasn't ready for him to go, after experiencing the ability to SIT DOWN and drink a cup of coffee without interruption, I am so ready. So. Freaking. Ready!

So, with high anticipation and excitement on my own part this morning, I woke up extra early, had breakfast made, laundry done and folded, and things laid out and ready to go. I woke the boys up, fed and dressed them, taking extra care on the hair and outfits (I have boys, no girls. Their hair and clothes is my girl outlet.), and we were ready to go. Until I opened my patio door to let the dogs out while we walked across the parking lot to the school. Dread filled my heart.

The parking lot was empty.

A quick phone call to the school and I discovered school was cancelled today. Why? Because it is 12 below zero.

Really?

Yes, really.

Apparently, living in South Dakota is rough. 12 below zero IS cold, don't get me wrong, but it isn't the coldest it has been or will get.

They will probably ask for federal aid when it really gets cold.

So, needless to say, no coffee in peace. The house is a mess. And we are all very tired.

It better warm up tomorrow.
